The Night Tour with The Bug Lady was wonderful. It was in fact with two expert guides: Tracie (The Bug Lady), who is a biologist, and her husband Gianfranco, who is a naturalist and nature photographer. Tracie’s special interests are in entomology and arachnology and Gianfranco’s interests are herpetology and (reptiles). They do not limit themselves to these however, as they both have an incredible knowledge of tropical wildlife and make a great team. While one is explaining about one creature the other is off searching for the next.
Tracie was recommended to my by a colleague from UWCSEA, but she is also mentioned in the Lonely Planet so I was a bit worried about whether I would get on a tour due to her popularity. (If you come to Drake Bay, make sure to book well ahead). The added bonus is that the next day Tracie and Gian will email a PDF with a list of all the animals seen during the tour. Especially great for people like me with a memory like a sieve. They include links to further fascinating information so I have been on another long Internet trawl, reading up on all the things I saw.
There were many trapdoor spiders, but they were not so easy to see as their lids blended into the moss.
I was also very lucky to see the net-casting spider.
But watch this amazing excerpt from a BBC documentary, clearly showing the spider in action. This was taken in the same area.

Another special treat was finding this red-eyed tree snake.
Here are some of the other amazing creatures we saw.
I have left the very best until last: The tailless whip scorpion.
