Travelling to USA was such a bonus trip that initially was not part of my plan, however my brother Ross rightly pointed out to me that flying via New York was the best way to get from Central America to Kenya. Apart from spending time with my brother and his family, the other magical bonus of flying to USA was the opportunity to visit some of my ex-students.
My flight from Panama to New York was via Houston. On the first leg of the flight there technical problems so our 2:30pm flight ended up departing at 7:00am the next morning, after a night in a nearby airport hotel. The fortuitous result being that I got to spend an entire afternoon and evening with Alisha, an ex-student from the class of 2003. Alisha was in my GCSE music class and is now a saxophonist performing in several bands in Houston. After school, Alisha studied jazz at the Queensland Conservatory.
It just so happened that the evening I ended up in Houston, Alisha had a gig with “Steve Krase & The In Crowd”, playing at a bistro called “Capones”. I was bursting with pride sitting with my beer watching Alisha rock the house and wishing Miles, her high school sax teacher and my colleague, was there to see this. She was the centre of attention and rightfully so with her exciting solos.
After the gig we still had some energy so we headed to “Big Easy” and played some pool. Alisha then had a jam with two other musicians there. It was a late night but a really fun one!
Here is some video footage of Alisha in action.
