Happy Birthday Jenna from Chobe River, Botswana

It was rather exciting to know that one year ago my daughter was exactly where I am now.  I decided to make this video message for her 25th birthday. The video features a walk around the Victoria FAlls then on an outing to Chobe National Park, first on a river cruise and then on safari.  This involved going through a spot where 4 countries meet – remarkable!  Also I have never seen so many hippos in all my life or been so close to any!  Enjoy! Chobe National Park is very special!

Gorillas in Uganda: a lifelong dream fulfilled…

MVI_1012Sitting in the airport café, Ruth says to me “Don’t you think it a bit ominous there is a black out in an international airport? Too true – aren’t airports supposed to be secured against such things? Isn’t’ an emergency generator supposed to kick in at some point? I pondered the effects this might have on the control tower, but before I had time to dwell on this point, a loud “fuck” echoed across the café.  We both glanced across at a well-dressed white businessman typing away on his laptop in the booth next to us.  No – surely not!  But yes – there it came again: “Fuck”!  Or was it “farck”? No – definitely “Fuck” with a long drawn out American vowel and the volume to match. Continue reading

Tsavo East National Park

IMG_0683“Jambo!”

I slowly opened my eyes and looked up through thick fly wire netting sown into a heavy green canvas window, momentarily confused about where I was.  A wide toothy grin on the face of a young man greeted me with another “Jambo” whilst pouring tea into a white cup and saucer on a small table outside.  “Jambo” I replied sleepily, “Mzuri”. Nairobi National Park

IMG_0198What is so amazing about Nairobi National Park is how close it is to the city!  It is quite surreal taking photographs of giraffes and rhinos in the wild with city buildings in the background.  What foresight it was to have set aside this precious land for the wildlife. Continue reading

Corcovado National Park: Costa Rica

IMG_1474

Visiting Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsular of Costa Rica, was another dream come true for me.  I read about it many years ago in the National Geographic, who claim Corcovado to be “the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity”. Continue reading

Amblypygids

DSCF4040I am not usually one to disturb wildlife but I am doing my bit to dispel the myth that these little critters are harmful.  They are very docile, as you can see, and completely harmless.  I was totally fascinated by this critter and was asking so many questions that I think my guide put it on my face to shut me up!  🙂 Continue reading

Night Tour in Drake Bay: Costa Rica

IMG_1410The Night Tour with The Bug Lady was wonderful.  It was in fact with two expert guides: Tracie (The Bug Lady), who is a biologist, and her husband Gianfranco, who is a naturalist and nature photographer. Tracie’s special interests are in entomology and arachnology and Gianfranco’s interests are herpetology and  (reptiles).  Continue reading
